UNDER HEAVEN by Xu Zhen

I’m so mesmerized by this artwork by Shanghai based artist Xu Zhen.  It is oil on canvas made with a pastry icing bag, looking like a sweetened, over decorated dessert with an artificial flavor.  It is called “under heaven” and that is a reference to a ancient Chinese concept of ‘tian xia’ – ‘all under heaven’ – because the pattern reminds of cityscapes seen from space. As it references to that we are nothing but tiny life forms coexisting in a mass – much like the experience of living in a Chinese city.

It looks so overwhelmingly beautiful and I love it, I just want to eat it too.
