Up-&-Coming Creatives no. 06
Lucilla Gray is one of my all time favorite up and coming designers and is also one of the first of which I ever used while starting my styling carreer. She gracefully was always willing to lend me some amazing garments, some of which I used for styling a part of The Go-See Project with Íris Björk, which you can have a look at here, here and here!
Lucilla Gray from Massey University in 2014, she launched her eponymous label with a debut at London Fashion Week in 2015. The New Zealand based contemporary womenswear brand is known for its clean cuts and strong silhouettes, offering a youthful yet powerful aesthetic. Lucilla Gray is a label for a modern woman which embodies feminine intelligence and merges conceptual fashion with ready to wear ideals.
Have a look at some of my favorite looks from her SS16 lookbook! Can’t wait to get my hands on a pieces or two to style with! Below are some questions I asked the talented designer, about her inspirations and the new SS16 collection.
Tell us a little bit about your SS16 collection. You’ve introduced some prints to the collection, as well as a new interesting color composition and structure to it. Where did the inspiration from that come?
Spring/Summer 16 was inspired by Japanese design principles and gardens. I wanted the collection to have a sense of playfulness and romance, this was reflected in the colours, prints and silhouettes. Creating with structure has become a core element to my work.
The most striking pieces to me is the puffer coat, which piece or garment is your favorite and why?
The puffer coat is actually my favourite piece, I designed it for beau who modelled in my fashion week presentation. I like how it’s an androgynous garment which has become a defining look from the collection.
What are the biggest challenges a young up and coming designer in New Zealand has to face? Or even challenges you might face internationally?
Young New Zealand designers can feel a bit isolated from the rest of the world but I think that’s part of what gives us a unique voice in the creative industry. If you think with an international mindset, nothing holds you back.
Where is your collection available to buy? Do you have any plans to expand your list of stockists?
SS16 will be available to purchase from my online store and launching into New Zealand boutiques next year. I’d love to create more places for people to experience my collections.
Who is your biggest source of inspiration and what drives you to work as hard as you do to keep your own brand up and running?
My family is a huge source of inspiration, they work really hard running their own businesses. They inspire me everyday to keep going.
Who would be your dream person to wear Lucilla Gray, and why?
I don’t really have one dream person, I think anyone who chooses to wear Lucilla Gray is a dream!
What are you most excited about in the near future for your label, or yourself as a young creative?
Next year is going to be a big year with upcoming store launches and a of couple projects in the pipeline. I’m excited for new challenges and pushing myself as businesswoman and designer.
