The Ladies of Secret Solstice- Nanna from Of Monsters and Men

Of Monsters and Men are conquering the world. What an amazing band! They´ve gone so far with their extraordinary sound and by just being themselves. We met up with the beautiful Nanna and of course did the Solstice talk.

What is the best thing about being a musician from Iceland?

The isolation, space and tranquility. It’s the best place to come back to after a long tour.

Which female artist were you inspired by growing up?

Today I’m hugely inspired by other women but when I was growing up I didn’t really have many female musical heroes in particular. Although, like pretty much all girls my age Spice Girls was the first band I ever loved. Later when i picked up a guitar, Lay Low was someone I really liked.

Your biggest influences in writing music?

Hearing a song that makes you go to a certain place or a feeling is often very inspiring. Environment influences me a lot, I like feeling isolated and out of reach. Also I’m a huge horror fan and I feel like that bleeds into the lyrics.

What advice do you give young ladies forming bands today?

You are equally smart and capable as anyone else. Talent is something you earn not something you are born with. Write, learn an instrument and know your instrument! Be heard and be curious and don’t be afraid to fail.

Any gigs at Secret Solstice that you would love to see?

I’m bummed that I’ll be missing most of it cause I won’t be in Iceland until the day of our show. But I think Die Antwoord is playing the same night as we are so I want to see them. Also I’d love to see Kelela, I have a big girl crush on her.

Any advise to Secret Solstice goers? Jump around! Jump around! Jump up, jump up and get down! And now this song is stuck in your head. You are welcome.
