London Fashion Week- Haizhen Wang AW 17

I´ve had a fashion crush on Haizhen Wang for some time and this London Fashion Week confirmed that crush. His latest collection In Transit AW/17 is blowing my mind. The idea of fashion as a product of transition is nothing new – indeed, fashion’s sole purpose is to be a marker of our times. Yet Haizhen Wang has reinterpreted movement and flux with new meaning for AW17.

As a response to the growing immigration crises across the world, the collection embodies the role of the transient as they better prepare themselves for continual transfer. Oversized patch pockets and raincoat materials reflect the need to defend from the elements. Ideas of utility continue from SS17, with slogan badges reading ‘fragile’, ‘handle with care’, ‘priority’ and ‘air eligible’ to convey the different reasons behind human transit.  Tied details also play a part with wrapped waistlines, the use of corsets and extra long belts, again reinforcing notions of luggage, travel and passage.

But despite Haizhen Wang’s new direction with an ode to the transient, the designer’s signature mix of raw edges and deconstruction is still very much apparent. The end result is a collection that is illustrative not only of Wang’s skill as designer, but also as a communicator of an important global issue through modern, wearable pieces.
